Pure Femininity

 The
antique lace scarf and blue vase could have easily graced the dresser of a young
woman during spring in the deep south. One can almost smell the intense aroma
of orange blossoms wafting through the open window. The deep pink of the
Hibiscus flowers echoes the feminine theme of the painting.

Travels with Charlie

 This
is a very special piece to me personally. Charlie was my father and many of the
pieces in the painting were objects he brought back from WWII. He never talked
much about the war and as a child I was never really fond of his treasures. Only
after he died did I learn the story about the plate in the painting. The piece
was done in a small town in Holland. It is a commemorative piece for the 50th
birthday of Queen Whilimina. The townsfolk hid the pieces from the Nazi's
because they feared their handiwork would be destroyed. When the war was over,
my father's troop came through the village. The people were hungry and the
soldiers shared their food and water with the villagers. To show their
appreciation, the people in the town dug up the pieces they hid and gave them to
the soldiers as their way of expressing thanks. Now I really understand why it
meant so much to my father. Charlie (or Mac as we
called him) always encouraged me in my artistic
pursuits and would have been proud of this piece that bears his name.
Tea with Anna

 The
tea set was a gift from my husband's grandmother Anna. When we would visit her,
Anna and I would sit in the kitchen and have a cup of tea. We could spend hours
talking. I really enjoyed when she shared about growing up in New York, how she
met her husband Sam, and many other stories of her life. As she got older and we
moved further away, those times together got fewer and fewer. She died recently,
but every time I see the tea set, the memory of having tea in her kitchen is
fresh and comforting.
Gardenias and Old Lace

This was the first major
still life I ever tackled. The items are significant
and have strong sentimental value. The tea cup is from my mother's china. As
a child I always loved it. The china pattern depicts gardenias.
Growing up as a child, I had never seen a gardenia. When we moved to
our home here, we inherited two vintage gardenia bushes. The perfume and
candle makers are wise to use the gardenia's scent. It is intoxicating. The
lace bureau scarf was from my parents bedroom. The small cut crystal vase
was the final touch to this lovely arrangement.
